While Ed Hardy: Deeper than Skin is on view at the @deYoungmuseum in San Francisco through October 6, 2019, Juxtapoz will be sharing reflections from influential artists who carry on the tradition of Hardy's unique tattoo career, including tattoo tales from contemporary artists, as well as stories from our archives that share the sentiment of Hardy's creative sphere.

Today we look at the Juxtapoz Tattoo Art Art Issue we published in 2003, which featured an essay by Ed Hardy on his and the works of another tattoo legend, Bob Roberts. Here is an excerpt from the essay:

"In the early 1990s, Bob began pursuing his own muse, laying down intricate, perfectly layered watercolor epics that fuse classic American tattoo imagery. Tibetan thangka meditative paintings and outlaw biker and lowrider designs. His experience as a musician also impacts the work. Through utilizing the controlled format of black-out-lined, spit-shaded tattoo flash, his paintings take things over the top into a complex mix of a world familiar yet never seen before." #artofthetattoo
