The reason for this is foxes are very adaptable to a wide variety of environments. No other fox represents this adaptability better than the red fox. They are truly a jack of all trades. Some remarkable adaptations make this possible. The red fox can be active during the day or night. Their eyes are well adapted to see during high or low light conditions. This is due to an iris that has a very high ratio of maximum open to maximum closed. They also have a well developed tapetum lucidum. This structure is behind the retina. It bounces light that has already been through the retina back through it again. This gives the photoreceptors two chances to “see” the light. The red fox also has a very wide range, from the Arctic latitudes all the way down to Mexico. Living in these varied climates required them to evolve efficient ways to thermoregulate. They have a very dense undercoat that keeps them warm in the coldest conditions. In hot conditions they will loose their undercoat and the remaining fur reflects heat away from them. They also have a structure in their nose called a carotid rete. This structure cools the blood going to the brain by having the flow go next to venous blood that was cooled due to evaporation in the nose and mouth. They also have the ability to direct blood to areas on their body with less fur, acting like mini radiators. Red foxes are truly remarkable creatures. .
