The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum in Oświęcim, Poland, is a series of remembrance sites that include the former German Nazi concentration camps Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau. It is devoted to the memory of the victims who died at both camps during World War II. This Overview shows Birkenau, which housed as many as 200,000 prisoners at once and was responsible for 90% of the deaths in the Auschwitz complex — approximately a million people. In 2017, the museum had 2.1 million visitors from across the world. /// Created by @Daily Overview, source imagery: @maxartechnologies

I was about the only one there in the dark of winter many years ago walking through a foot a snow near closing time. They were about to lock the gates and we were at the other end. To say it is a horrifying and terrifying place is an understatement. So many needless deaths and you can feel the pain and suffering rip through you. It’s no easy place to go, but if you can, do. Bear witness on what we as humans can do to our fellow humans (and still do) when extreme ideology overcomes all sense.

I’ve been there and it was one of the hardest trips in my life, you can still feel the pain after almost 80 years and the conscouisness that so many people died and suffered in the very same spot you’re standing at the moment is hard and painfull. It’s a must see for everyone at least once in their lives so that they knew what it looked like and so that noone let do this again to the humanity

Thank you for sharing. While Auschwitz II-Birkenau was planned for ca. 200,000 prisoners, the maximum number of people in the barracks never exceeded 90,000. The camp was in fact never completed. At the top one can see remains of the never finished third sector in the camp. The fourth sector was planned to be built in the bottom (below sector I) but this was never even began.

Important: exactly the same type of camps in Siberia has never been seen or focused in the same way for the rest of the world, and here we are again, just wait.

What is additionally horrifying is how close this camp was to the civilian population. They knew and did nothing.
