Throwback ! 2004 competing with my partner Aneta Piotrowska in Poland. This was just a short intro before the Final round actually begun. Usually there are multiple couples on the floor dancing at the same time. A typical competition starts at 9am and goes until 11pm. Sometimes later. Technique, practice and finesse are important but in those final rounds it really just came down to stamina. Cause if you didn’t have the energy you couldn’t execute the technique or the quality of movement. I struggled a lot competing because I didn’t like to eat on the day before I danced. But like I said, those comps lasted ALL day with multiple rounds, so I remember running on fumes just trying to get through. Competing taught me work ethic, how to be goal orientated and gave me a competitive drive that has stayed with me. Also, my partner was dating this guy with brown hair, and I thought if I died my hair brown she would like me.The things we do when we’re young. #dance #ballroom #latin #samba #competition #quickhips

You might not read this but I just wanted to tell you that watching your show made me think about my time as a competition dancer a lot. I thought I moved on long time ago and hadn't thought much about it since then, but like you said, being a dancer definitely made me a stronger person both physically and mentally and I am grateful for that. However, I couldn't get over the idea that I wasn't enough, so I quit instead of trying harder. I was ashamed for being a quitter and never said to anyone proudly I used to be a dancer. Then I heard your show was gonna come to my town and I went. At the end of the show, you just shook me unannounced saying things (in case it's a spoiler😅) and I just couldn't stop crying. I still love to dance and shouldn't feel guilty to say it just because I'm not a winner. Derek, thank you so much for sharing your feelings and making me realize something important. Once a dancer, always a dancer❤️

I love seeing old videos of you DWTS Pros, when you were still competing! I'm a competitive dancer myself and still competing currently. It's easy to forget that you of course competed "just like us", not just at DWTS 😉

Thank you for sharing, I will be sending to my students for a friendly reminder on how important it is to eat ! Of course we want to feel nice and trim but like you said we need ENERGY ! 😄🙌🏽

Exactly the reason I love to compete @derekhough ( international standard now). You can’t beat the thrill and exhaustion from competing but it’s the best! I love this!

Everyone keeps commenting on the hips fluidity. Which is undoubtedly amazing but I just can't believe how your entire body seems like water flowing through space. 😯

Oh come on, please get back to DWTS and show more of your creativity and passion! You should be some where to be more active not just boring judge!!😔
