On this day in 1936, @SydneyAirport was renamed Sydney (Kingsford Smith) Airport, in honour of pioneering Australian aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith after his disappearance during a flight the previous year. This photograph, taken in 1933, shows Sir Charles Kingsford Smith standing in front of the Southern Cross aircraft, which he had used several years earlier to make the first trans-Pacific flight to Australia from the mainland United States.
