While the conservation treatment of #Renoir’s “The Great Bathers” was underway, the painting’s frame received attention from the museum’s Conservation Framer, Chris Ferguson. Taking care to preserve the frame’s overall aged appearance, he removed superficial surface grime and old restoration materials that covered the original surface. He then filled small losses and carved replacements for larger missing sections of ornament, using intact areas of the frame as a guide for re-creating details of shape and surface. Finally, Chris gilded the repairs and toned the new gold to match the surrounding areas of the frame.
