These 11 words taught me one of the greatest lessons I’ve ever learned: When your child enters the room, does your face light up? Thank you for that gift, Toni. The Toni Morrison conversation that changed my life will re-air tonight at 8 PM on @owntv. Timeless.

I believe that every Nigerian parent should see this post and understand how it translates to their children’s self worth. Oh! This is so hard on me personally and I’m 💯 certain that it is because of my upbringing. Growing up in a typical Nigerian household, this is how my parents showed their acceptance of me. Love is “doing the right thing” and being properly dressed. Now that I have my beautiful brown skin boys, I pay particular attention to my facial reaction to what they do and how they do it. I want my children to see “happy” when they look at me; I want them to see “she’s always here for me”, I want them to feel my entire love for them in whatever situation because that’s all I want for them to feel— Unconditional love and total acceptance.

Hampton, Virginia's first Africans arrived at Point Comfort, on the James River , late in August 1619. There, Negroes" from the English ship White Lion were sold in exchange for food and some were transported to Jamestown, where they were sold again
We cannot forget those that went before us
We cannot forget the lives lost, their memories lying at the bottom of The Atlantic.
We must come together as children of royalty and REMEMBER 1619-2019 #REMEMBERTHE400.
Counting down to year 400 since the first arrival of Africans to Hampton, Virginia
What can you do to help?

My grandmother and Mother taught me this. It was during the time my oldest daughter went through the awkward age and didn’t want the hugs and kisses. I wanted her to know how much I loved her and that I was happy when she came home, instead of her just running up to her room. I began to treat her like royalty had arrived. At first it was awkward, but then she flourished. I remember this with all my family.

Oprah, I remember this episode. I had not had children yet, but those words stuck with me. My kids are now 16 and 14 and I make a conscious effort to greet them with a smile and love every day and every time they come I to the room. I have wonderful relationships with my children, and this lesson, I believe helped shape those relationships 💜 Thank you to you both🙂

That is so powerful. And, not only true for children; it’s important for adults too to know that you are noticed and loved no matter what. Also for animals it’s meaningful to show how much you care. It is like saying from one soul to another what a wonderful gift it is that you both share this planet in this lifetime❤️♥️Love makes the world go ‘round
