And thanks for @dariusjagjag for nominating me. I opted out of the interview and wrote an email instead. Here it is in full. Read if you wish. Photo by @sadieayholliday Asking why an inclusive environment is important is asking why I should be allowed a seat at the table. While a discussion on diversity and inclusivity is essential, that question should be answered by now. How can the industry do better? The answer is: Systemic change, not platitudes and playlists. Every year I see the music business celebrate Pride month by presenting their "Pride Artist Playlists" and streaming services flaunting their "Pride Anthems.” And yet the statistics don’t lie. There are still few LGBTQ+ people in executive roles within these companies. It’s disheartening to see these same organizations wave the flag and pledge alliance with our community without implementing fundamental changes. Straight white men still hold almost all of the keys to every door in the music business. Monetizing gay culture is not helping gay culture. It doesn’t do anything to lift LGBTQ+ people up within this industry or any other industry. Pride is visibility and representation. It is creating a safe environment. But its also demanding access, opportunity, and protection in the work place. I’d like to see the industry move away from showing nebulous support of the LGBTQ+ community with rainbow avatars for 30 days a year, and actively start hiring, mentoring, promoting, signing and supporting more women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals. Their perspectives in the workplace will be invaluable to its creative output. I would prefer they save the $ from their pride marketing plans and donate it to places like the Tegan and Sara Foundation, the Matthew Shephard Foundation, the Trevor Project etc, so that they can truly do some good, have serious impact on an economic level, and save some lives. To those that are doing this - and are making real efforts at providing access and opportunities - we celebrate you. You are opening lanes for queer kids everywhere.....」8月10日 22時10分 - devendrabanhart
