I LOVE horses. I’ve had them throughout my life. I'm against carriages, racing, rodeos or forcing a horse to compete. BTW in my past I’ve been a willing participant in all of those, but that’s the great thing about time, if you use it right...you grow. I still love riding (without a saddle, they don’t seem to like them, I know I wouldn’t), you can really bond with a horse through this. I believe it’s good for their health, it keeps them fit, just like when walking a dog. I’m sure there are plenty of people who feel we shouldn’t ride them at all. So to my animal lovers, what are your thoughts on this topic? @peta, I’m super curious to hear your stance on individuals riding horses, because I love and respect you guys so much ❤️

I so agree on this statement overall. There is so many shitty and sad situations in the equine world. On the other hand, as someone who is involved with them every single day, there is many positives to saddles. We had ours custom fit, it acts as a brace distribing the weight properly. One of our boys prefers saddle over bareback, I think it hurts his back when rode bareback. But our other boy has no cares and will free run/ lope bareback or saddled. I’m more anti bit to be honest though, I hate those things! Bit-less bridals only!!!!! The younger horse we are looking to purchase is bit trained only, and we are going to switch him when we can. As for gaming and competing, I’m not a huge fan of it to be completely honest. HATE horse racing, HATE bronc rodeos etc. Barels and poles, those are fun tho . If your horse receives regular chiropractic care , hoof treatment etc and well respected , I don’t mind it. All depends on the horse, rider and team though. Gwenny games on the young horse ( 6 year old ex race horse, just off the track less than two years ago) and the horse “seems” to love going new places and seeing new things 🖤. He’s very curious, dopey and sweet. He loves to free run and you don’t need to kick him or anything! But sadly, during gameshows you do see so many people spurred up , whips and bits and all the thangs. If you just have fun, bond with your loved animal and work on personal records it can be so much fun. But using your horse for trophy needs I don’t love. I see so many people get on their horses like it’s their fault they didn’t win, shake my damn HEAD! I hate it!!!! Anyways, what I personally feel is best, if you are going to have a relationship with a horse and take on that massive responsibility is to go off of who they are. What they seem to enjoy, stick to their enjoyments and most of all treat them with the upmost respect and care. Wild horses? leave them be. Domestically bred ones? I think it’s a beautiful situation and relationship for them both if the owner is knowledgeable and respectful. I love horses and seeing them is the highlight of my day 🖤🖤🖤!

I actively ride horses (and have for a while). I find riding domestic horses can be beneficial for their health as it keeps them fit. Some absolutely love to work/compete! That being said, I do not always agree on the way horses are trained, treated, or, as you said, “forced to compete”. I bought a horse 4 years ago and she was terrified of humans. I could see she had a very curious and sweet side so I threw all my money into taking care of her. She loved to try new things like jumping, bareback riding, trail riding, competing (she would actually hear the buzzer and put her whole heart into the course). September 2018 she started to feel uncomfortable and wasn’t acting herself. I got the heartbreaking news that she had developed navicular disease (genetic disorder) at the young age of 8. I have pulled her out of the competitive world and she is now only doing light rides when she wants and is more of a companion horse to some older horses. Some people would’ve drugged her up so she could keep competing, but I decided that it’s not fair to drive her into the ground. So she’s now a retired 9 year old living an amazing life out with friends and this older lady who’s willing to keep her for the rest of her life and allows me to visit

Here's an old Indian story: In the beginning of time man and animals all walked this Earth together. As time went on man started to be misled by ego and put himself above all other's. The animals called a Grand council to discuss this growing problem. They decided to remove themselves from man and stop communicating with them. They called on Mother Earth to help separate them. A great storm came up and the Earth began to quake and split to separate man from the animals. At the last minute the horse and dog both ran and jumped over the great divide! The other's yelled at them and asked what they were doing! The dog said I will teach man forgiveness and unconditional love. The horse sai, I will guide them and teach them accountability, mirror them so they can change and heal, and discover their true selves. So they committed themselves to service as to make man better.

@wesgoble_05 so you see a site named PETAkillsanimals.com and actually expected it to have positive things to say about it? There's two sides to every story, and these propaganda- like sites that only post the good or bad to promote their side are only worsening the problem. I'm not saying that stuff doesn't happen, I'm saying that showing the act without context or circumstance is an incredibly weak and biased argument. If you're gonna throw out websites, throw out one of each, so people can think for themselves, not everyone likes brainwashing. And if you paid attention, I never called you out, and I only mentioned the trophy animals in question, never said anything about deer or other such like. I'm from a hunting community, I get it, but my neighbors eat venison and don't go harpooning gators for shits. That's my line in the sand, do with it what you will.

@shawn__ashworth I work with horse's in therapy. They are the teacher's of relationship and healing. I don't believe they hate saddles or wagon's if equipped correctly, but unfortunately most people are ignorant in what a proper fitting saddle or harness is and how to adjust them correctly. I do like horsemanship in most rodeo or competitions. Some rare people that compete are great horseman. I believe the horse wants to be with the human, and together we bring out the best in each other. I've spent days in end with Mustang's, trained horse's for 31 years, worked on ranches and guided dude's. My whole life the horses have provided my living. I thank them everyday.

Having worked training horses until I retired. I must say that from my experience, most horses are intelligent creatures who like to stay active. Get to know your horse and if your horse does not like to be ridden do not ride him. If your horse does not like to wear a saddle then only ride in areas where both you and your horse can be safe with out the saddle. If you do not know your horse well enough to make these decisions then please find a qualified groom to help you and your horse get to know one another until you feel qualified to make these decisions on your own. And please treat all horses with respect and dignity.
