Try new things, explore unchartered territories BUT don’t always feel like you need to reinvent the wheel. This clip captures the paradoxical nature of these thoughts. I‘m not the type of person that usually gravitates toward wearing lots of color. So, this bright orange dress was a bit of a departure for me. I only wore this dress once in my career and, looking back, I wish I had worn it more. However, I’m grateful I had the audacity to wear it at one of the most important competitions of the year (the World Championships). Sometimes, you just need to try new things! Whereas, in this spiral sequence, I do an inside to outside edge spiral that was basically my staple in almost every program. I remember like it was yesterday trying to come up with something to jazz up my mundane spiral sequence. I laugh just thinking how comical it was trying to skate full speed with my leg above head while controlling my edges from one side to another - it’s like skiing backwards when all you know is going forwards. Make no mistake, I hit my pretty toepick and ate ice more than a few times. But I finally discovered something, which was done a million times before, just by combining two elements together. As you search for your own discoveries, sometimes you don’t need to look further than the instruments and tools that you already have to find something new. #wednesdaywisdom #reminderformyself #kwanicles

That was a beautiful dress! You looked great in it! I haven’t been able to watch skating since you stopped competing. No one has ever or will ever touch me the way you did with your complete package of skating. I feel like you never received the full credit you truly deserved for being the most complete skater ever. It’s too bad they had to start putting so much emphasis on triple/triples and quads and that ridiculous scoring system they came up with. It really killed any sense of beauty and musicality that you perfected in all your years of competing. You are a treasure to the skating world.

I'm a figure skater I haven't completed in 10 years. Got scared lost the hardest competition, got depressed have up. But I'm coaching now. I'm 29 I look up to you and I always have your are and will always be my number one skater. Are you ever to old to compete? After I gave up competing I just skated for the joy of skating. I wanted to be so much like you but you were perfection still are. 😭😭😭 I'm hoping to give other children the dreams of reaching things they feel they can't and never giving up

That was a beautiful dress, Michelle. I heard you wore those dresses because you lost your luggage at the airport while going to those worlds? Not to mention your boot falling apart fiasco lol! I think this dress suits East of Eden more so than the other dresses that you wore to skate to this program. Still waiting for a video of you doing another triple triple (in practice) besides the triple toe triple toe.

I remember that colorful dress, your beautiful smile and your unabashed joy during and after skating such a magnificent program.🏆💐 When I read your words of wisdom, I was reminded of your niece's prayer in which she thanked God for colors. 🧡💛❤️I am now 75 years old and I just refuse to give up on conquering today's rapidly evolving technology. I consider that my daily challenge!👵🏽🤔

Love this post and this iconic move! Takes me back to when I did a spiral years ago that many compared to Nicole Bobek’s, believe it or not, and I remember an exhibition that I tried too hard to get my free leg up higher, caught my toe pick and bellyflopped with a thunderous thud on the ice and the audience gasped. It hurt pretty bad 🤦🏻♂️.

And you’re part of the reason when I started skating at age 54 the first thing I learned that made me feel like a real figure skater was the spiral. I can hold a RBO catch a good long time. The problem is getting practice ice clear enough to go for it.
