Toni. Beloved. The name of one of my favorites of all of her books. The name that best describes her for so many, too. She touched the very core of countless hearts.
•
“We die,” She once said. “That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives.”
•
How does one write something halfway decent enough to commemorate one of our greatest writers? I don’t know how. But I will ruminate on her courage, her poignancy, and her gift for challenging us to be better. She told her students — and thus taught us all — “When you get these jobs that you have been so brilliantly trained for, just remember that your real job is that if you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else.” Indeed.
•
And she reminded us, with perfect clarity, not to ever give into inaction. No matter what we might be up against. “This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we do language. That is how civilizations heal.” For her, let’s get to work. #ToniMorrison

I studied some of her books A Mercy, Home, Jazz, Sula... to be honest I’m not a literary girl, but learning about her works (particularly this year) and after having found some links with my fav’ singer’s motivations (-👑B-), I’ve finally realized the importance of the African American deal, and the place of womanhood and motherhood in the society throughout the ages, I learned to see how extraordinary in the ordinary life women should have been considered. Maybe my words have no sense. I am not sad, I confess, I am moved to see that Once out of my uni, Toni Morrison’s words really touched and inspired people. I am moved that she was not just the subject of a compulsory class. But a real source of strength and pride and motivation. Thank you Miss Morrison 👏🏼

I PM'd you but I know you're so busy and I'm confident your inbox gets flooded! I saw your story about guns getting taken from those who have OP out against them. A judge in IL ordered that I have to pay $6K to my ex because I took out an OP against him to protect myself and my daughter. The state took his FOID card and now I have to pay him money to reimburse him for that?! AND I was told to do so by Department of Child and Family Services! The system is so broken and the laws are so messed up. 😔 Please help! Keep using your voice for issues like this. 💔

Hi Sophia! I’ve always been into home decor and design, so I’ve been following your home renovation articles on Elle. I’m thoroughly enjoying watching the process of your home overhaul. I’ve always loved the aesthetic of your “treehouse” home and love the concept of what you’re doing with the new home. Will you still be living in the treehouse home? If not, I will miss seeing the views from your home in your stories because all the tree landscape was utterly breathtaking. Good luck with the reno! Looking forward to seeing more of the process ✌🏼

Forty black people shot this past weekend in Chicago. Where’s the outrage by Bush, her friends on the left and the media about this? It just sells more newspapers to talk about white terrorists. Nobody seems to care about black people. Pure racism!

The world got a little bit darker today. Toni Morrison was a beacon of light that shined through her words. "Sweet, crazy conversations full of half sentences, daydreams and misunderstandings more thrilling than understanding could ever be". T.M
