Toni Morrison, the first black woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, has died at age 88.
Morrison's publisher announced that she died Monday night in New York. Her family issued a statement through the publisher saying she died after a brief illness.
In addition to authoring such works as the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Beloved," Morrison was also a teacher, an editor, and a cherished friend and mentor to other writers.
