Paws up or paws down for Instagram hiding likes? 🐾
Let’s talk about the pros/cons and why you’re for or against it. There is no right or wrong answer with this one but I’d love to hear the different perspectives.
Personally I think it would be a positive change. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t care about #s. They do have value and are important but, shouldn’t be the main thing in which someone measures their own value. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t been there in fact, many times my stress level has risen to unhealthy heights over them. From 7 years of doing this I’ve changed how I value myself on social media. Sure it feels great to see something get a lot of likes and to get a lot of followers but it’s about so much more. I just spoke about this on a panel I did with @thedodo at VidCon. I watch numbers less now than ever before yet my engagement is going up!
People have gotten so obsessed with #s to the point of buying followers, joining engagement pods, and other types of what I call #s manipulation, that it compromises the quality of their content and authenticity. If it’s not organic, it’s false achievement, a participation trophy. People are losing sight to what really matters and wasting valuable time on numbers instead of sharing more authentic content or creating better content, whichever your goal is (depending on whether or not you are here as a business or just personal). Here’s an example, I started a page for our dog Halo @halotheblindshiba over a year ago and only just made it public this weekend because of how many were asking for her to have her own account. I didn’t do it for clout or likes. Just like on this account, what drives me to keep posting is not fan base size or likes, it’s seeing the way our content touches people....in the comment section. With 5 accounts to run plus TikTok I don’t often have time to reply back but I do read most of them and THAT is where my true gratification comes from, not the # of likes. That’s not to say I don’t like seeing likes, they just don’t carry as much weight for me as they once did. Thank you for reading this and thank you if you have ever left a comment for us! ❤️
What are your thoughts?

I get ya with running multiple accounts! I run Oreo's account on over a dozen different networks and it's definitely difficult to answer everyone all the time. As for likes, I've been there too, allowing it to stress me out. That's when I know I need a breather and have some snuggle time with the fluffs or go visit my family. Nowadays, I don't look at the likes. I just post things that make me happy. If they make me happy, chances are they're making others happy and that's what matters. Not the amount of likes! So I'm fine with likes being hidden. In fact, I'd go as far as to say it should be like that everywhere! Things should be rated in smiles instead! ;)

I like seeing the likes, especially when it comes to online businesses. From what I observed in the past, the more likes a business’ posts had, the more legitimate the business. Now I have to manually check the business online to see if it’s legit or just a scam. Plus it’s nice seeing the likes people I follow get on their posts! For me it’s like, ‘Yeah, that post was really good and did deserve that much engagement’. It’s hard to tell if people are actually engaging with posts now especially considering that not many (including myself) have much time to actually comment.

Personally, it’s never been about the number of likes for me, but then I have a private account, and not thousands and thousands of followers either. I post content that I enjoy, and it’s a snapshot of my life. A life that’s had ups and downs, and lots of happy and proud moments. I love your accounts, and enjoy seeing EVERYTHING that you post! 😍 I have noticed that sometimes stuff doesn’t show up in my feed until a couple days later though. Instagram’s algorithms maybe? 🤷♀️ Technology and I aren’t really friends yet, but we’re working on it. 🤣

@pizza_and_luna ....you mean like taking over an hour to word a post just exactly the way you want....having read it over and over multiple times making multiple tweaks? 💯 me! Honestly I like speaking live more than planning a written reply. You’d think with anxiety I’d have a fear of public speaking or live-streaming but honestly my brain doesn’t over analyze when I’m “live”. And thanks for the love! ❤️❤️

hmm as a person who posts art I'd say paws down just because I know it's not the healthiest form of validation but if someone likes your art it tells you that it's eye catching and therefore that you're doing something right and also, while it isn't the only source of motivation, it is one thing that makes people feel like their art is worth the time for some

I think we should be the only ones able to see how likes our photos. There no reason why other people should see how many likes we’ve gotten. What’s the value in that other than a temporary ego boost? Why does anyone need to know the number of follows you have or how many have liked a photo? @instagram Should make this info only visible to the page owners.
