It turned out that Bob was already habituated to humans and had been held in captivity, where he developed a condition called bumblefoot, which causes painful lesions and growths on the underside of a bird’s feet. Because of his condition, he couldn’t be returned to the wild, in the island’s salt flats, where a colony of 200-300 Caribbean flamingos live. Odette made Bob an ambassador @fdoccuracao charity, through which she educates locals about the importance of protecting the island’s wildlife.
