13 lessons I’ve learnt from starting a sustainable swimwear brand @staywildswim 🌊
➡️ There’s never a perfect time to launch a new business. You just need to suck it up, take the risk and start.
➡️ The fashion industry isn’t built to support sustainable brands. Don’t give up, just push harder for positive change.
➡️ No matter how organised you are, factories never stick to deadlines so factor that into your schedule.
➡️ There’s no difference between you and a “successful business woman”. They’re just someone who gave it go and you can too. In reality everyone is blagging it and learns on the job.
➡️ Sustainable options are more expensive, your budgets will get gobbled up in seconds so set aside more cash than you think.
➡️ There is so much more to starting a fashion brand than just making pieces and selling them. Customer service, admin and logistics will take up much more of your time than designing clothing.
➡️ Humans are so supportive and kind, when you’re struggling with a start up you realise how giving other people can be with their time and skills. Don’t be afraid to ask for a favour.
➡️ Abandon any glamourised ideas of being a “4 hour work week” entrepreneur. Being a business owner means working long days, including weekends. But you don’t mind because it’s your baby 👶🏼
➡️ It is easy to get caught up in tiny details of your business but in reality the most important thing is sales and cash flow. Focus on that.
➡️ Business partners are like a marriage, open communication is the secret to success.
➡️ Starting a business is one hell of a risk and leads to a rollercoaster of emotions. One minute you’re on cloud 9 and the next minute you’re questioning all your choices.
➡️ It is essential to not get too stuck on your own ideas for the brand and to actually listen to customer feedback, analyse customer sales and use that to shape future brand choices too.

em_and_plants I love the fact you’re sharing your real life struggles with this brand which is just beautiful I wish it was in my budget so I could support you. Of course with everything sustainable until it becomes more demanded it’s harder to drop prices. But, I am interested in maybe one day in the future doing a sustainable brand and I wonder did you have a lot saved up when you started? Cause of course start up money is the thing which will stop me right now because I need to save. I guess even though you do work long hours you can still choose your schedule which is nice. Just seems like a lot for someone like me with a lot less followers and marketing power to do :(
