Thomas Gainsborough’s ‘Portrait of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire’ from 1787 is as storied as its sitter, Georgiana Cavendish (née Spencer). Well-traveled, confident, and fashionable, Georgiana was one of the most famous aristocratic influencers of her day. Once full length, the painting was acquired by Miss Anne Maginnis in the early 1800s, who cut it in half to fit the space above her fireplace. In 1876, it was sold to art dealer William Agnew for 10,000 guineas – at the time marking the highest price ever paid for any work of art at auction. That record price garnered the attention of master criminal Adam Worth, who broke into Agnew’s gallery and cut the work from its frame. With this new prize, he traveled to America and South Africa, where he kept the painting in the false bottom of his trunk. Worth managed to keep the painting for 25 years, until negotiating for its return to Agnew’s son – through Pinkerton’s Detective Agency – who subsequently sold the painting to J. P. Morgan. Through J. P. Morgan’s granddaughter, it was sold at a Sotheby’s auction and acquired by @chatsworthofficial in 1994, thus returning Georgiana to her home in Derbyshire. djqualls @andrearapkeknowles Clearly you don’t understand what I mean. It’s in the text. The woman who owned the picture in the late 19th century cut it in half. She cut a Gainsborough portrait in half to fit over her fireplace. As art collectors, it’s our job to protect these things so they survive, intact, for those who come after us. I had a botched restoration of a Louis Valtat picture and I wept. It got damaged on my watch.

nicholasleclercq Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (1757 - 1806) was probably very insecure: addicted to gambling, manipulated and betrayed by her best friend. ciaochowlinda Great exhibit. I saw these in situ at Chatsworth House two years ago and all the art was overwhelming. Your display was top notch and easy to read all the descriptions without feeling exhausted.
