At Makaha Beach, riding longboards has always been central to Hawaiian culture. “There was a time, during the ‘70s, when in other countries you were scoffed at if you rode a longboard,” Claudia Woo, a longtime participant of the annual Buffalo Big Board Surfing Classic, said. “But it was always going on in Makaha. It never stopped.” Tap the link in our bio to learn more. Photographed by @gilliangarcia, written by @ellara

Sure! Boogie boards are fun, but you can't truly ride a wave. Waves must be respected, and feared. Come prepared. The ocean is no joke. The beauty of a longboard (as if there were any other kind) is that you can face the wave, dive into it, paddle against it for a moment. The board gives you a hair of advantage for a second. Feel, timing, lift. The ocean terrifies me; it's depth and enormity overwhelm me. But, I have seen these warriors face it for fun, they have encouraged me! Bless their hearts! The ocean is my life because it is so much bigger than me🌀
