It’s official!! The bill to end declawing was signed today by New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo making it the first state in the US to ban declawing! 🐾
Ginger is the main photo of this post because 13 years ago when she was a kitten & had her spay appt, we failed her! Before we were on social media where the facts about the declaw procedure were able to be shared far & wide, we, like many people were offered a front declaw on her as if it were a side of fries with a burger. We trusted our vet back then who said it was harmless. Simply put, we were just doing what was common practice....we didn’t know any better. That was in 2006. It was 2011 when I started becoming active in rescue & started to hear things I didn’t know. We had already adopted Mojo & Venus (both in 2009) but didn’t have them declawed because Mojo was already neutered & neither bothered anything. We had scratch posts, cat trees, & regularly trimmed their claws. When Venus went viral in 2012 & my involvement on social media went from hardly on to hardly off, & is when all the info really got to me. I felt sick, like an awful human but I was quickly reminded by a rescue friend that it was because I was duped by the vet like many others & that had I known that the first knuckles were actually amputated I would have NEVER consented to it! We learn from our past & become better. I’m an advocate for anti-declawing now. I connected a lot of dots after becoming educated like how Ginger is a biter & has “no-touch” spots unlike our other cats. She was the last cat we ever declawed. I know she would forgive us for our ignorance & if you were in our shoes once misinformed about the procedure by a vet you trusted, & haven’t declawed since, you should forgive yourself too.
This practice is unheard of or illegal in so many countries & viewed as barbaric mutilation. I’m glad to see the US, though late to the party, is coming around. Give a thank-you to @pawproject @ @City the Kitty for their relentless fight helping lead to this great achievement!
Congrats New York! Who do you think will be next?

I understand! Both Romeo and Kira are declawed and have been since they were only a few months old. This was 7-8 years ago when I was incredibly ignorant and listening to my at the time vet and at the time significant other.... flash forward to now, I would NEVER make such a decision again. I know NOW (as I have for the last maybe 3 years) what declawing really does to your cat and I would never ever do it again if given the chance. I fully regret my choice and aid in allowing it to be done to my cats but rest assured they have been indoor only cats their entire life with supervised harnessed outside visits. I wish I was more educated at the time that this was done... but you cannot change the past unfortunately. I'm glad they're beginning on banning it entirely! There just is no real reason to do it other than human personal gain. I have felt guilty too especially when people ask "are they declawed?!?!" I must say yes with my head hung but I will never put another cat through it again. I know far better now. Thank you for sharing your personal experiences too.

It's totally awesome that I live in the first state that finally outlawed declawing! At last! Now each & every remaining state must do the same. It's barbaric to day the least. The physical AND emotional pain it causes almost every single cat who has been declared is mind boggling. It is so blasted sad that their are still so many vets who practice this horrible surgery. I wouldn't even call it surgery. (It's more like putting your cat into a torture chamber & saying oh you'll get over it. At least my furniture will be fine.) Almost every other country in the world has outlawed declawing & yet our huge nation of 50 states still condones the practice. One state is all it takes to get the ball rolling. Well folks, New York state has done it. So now 49 states need to get off their butts & soon, like yesterday!!!! Living in NY state & happy to see that every veterinarian here HAS to abide by the law or else! 🤗❤😸

I am “one of THOSE people”!! I had one of my cats declawed 8 years ago because we rented an apartment and I didn’t want the cat harming the cabinets or anything else. He was a scratcher...he still is. I have had two other cats since (and still have declawed Charlie) and would never do it again. Fortunately, for Charlie, he has little to no known damage or pain...he still scratches his posts like he has claws, he doesn’t seem to show any signs of pain or arthritis in his feet...yet! I hope he never does. I had NO idea how invasive the declawing was. And it pains my heart and hurts me physically to think I had that done to him...all I can say is read and research BEFORE! Education is key to very important, life changing decisions of all kinds...even when it comes to your beloved Kitty!! 🐾♥️ #Iprayheforgivesme #Iprayhestayshealthy #Iprayhestayspainfree

Omg!! I’m crying cause you are so right. Same thing happened to me. I got my cat declawed cause I didn’t know better. Just doing what the vet recommended and she too was a biter and did not want to be touched often unless she was the one doing the touching. Anyway, I found out about how declawing works and I felt horrible that I had consented to have my cat declawed. I would never ever ever ever do that again and I make sure to tell anyone who has a new car or is even thinking about declawing, that it is just plain wrong. It’s funny that when I tell some people about declawing, they just assume that the nails are clipped but when I make the comparison of declawing to having your fingers cut at the knuckles, light bulbs go off. Thank you for sharing this!!

I have a 4 year old tabby, Scamper, who is declawed. We noticed a few years ago he was crying am awful lot so we took him to a new, highly rated vet who informed us that pieces of bones we're left inside his paws and that when he walked it felt like pins and needles. The vet removed the remaining bones but he continued to cry so we took him back and to take him out of his pain they cut the tendons in his fingers. Being declawed also mangled his back and spinal cord, cutting the tendons made his center of gravity change but he is out of pain and we ended up spending over $2000 on both surgery's. We have 2 other cats who are not declawed and are in much better physical and mental health than Scamper

Same for me and my Coconut 13 years ago. I didn’t know any better and my mom had my Licorice declawed before I moved out with him. Now I’m trying to talk sense into my sister who wants a kitten and is adamant about declawing because she anticipates it being a problem when she doesn’t even know that it will be. And she can’t get nail trims and scratching posts to register in her head. And my dad theorizes that adoption rates would decline and people like my sister would offer them good homes as opposed to crowded rescues. SO I have to gather lots of facts to present them. Anyone with ban related adoption (no return) success stories please share links!!!
