Craig Stecyk, 2019 Exhibition, “Beyond the Streets” Twenty Five Kent, NYNY.

“The ethos was (and is) to take whatever’s around you, whatever was given to you, and to make it into something that’s truly your own.” – @crstecykiii
⠀⠀⠀
Growing up, artist and surf/skate cultural legend, C.R. Stecyk’s father worked in the specialty automotive industry. His mother was a studio ceramicist. Their household atelier was filled with the necessary tools to construct and finish paint everything from native clay to Detroit steel and exotic aerospace composites.
⠀⠀⠀
There was a photographic darkroom on site surrounded by piles of fresh street posters. These missives were continually printed and ever ready to be tacked up and down the boulevards advertising upcoming hot rod gatherings and custom car shows.
⠀⠀⠀
On telephone poles across the country, these street posters became tattered parts of the very landscape itself. It’s from those derelict missives that C.R.’s inspiration emerged for a unique street art poster style that has become an iconic signature from the walls of the subway to the White House, the Rio Olympic Village, the Smithsonian and beyond.
⠀⠀⠀
The work displayed here in “Beyond the Streets” pays homage to his heritage, with mixed media monoprint posters painted with metallic automotive paint, surfboard pigments and personal glyphs symbolizing a life spent documenting cultural movements around the globe. The aforementioned piece also features Gotham photos created by four generations of his family – the negatives all located in the clans’ darkroom. And it’s from that humble enclosure and its three adjacent printing presses that this art continues to evolve throughout this special exhibition. ⚡️
