The owners of Purdue Pharma, which manufactures the highly addictive OxyContin painkiller, will no longer have their family name on the walls of the Louvre Museum in Paris. References to “the Sackler Wing” were covered with tape this week amid a growing outcry over the company's aggressive marketing of OxyContin. Several members of the Sackler family are facing lawsuits alleging that they boosted their wealth by pushing what they knew to be addictive and deadly painkillers onto doctors and patients over the course of a decade. In the United States, 47,600 overdose deaths were caused by opioids in 2017, according to the CDC. (📸: Getty Images)

I doubt the intent of the founders of this pill was to kill people. It was to relieve extreme pain. It’s hard to blame any specific party involved in this crisis because the medicine works if you use it responsibly. Also can’t blame addicts because it’s not something an actual true addict can control. People can abuse any type of prescription drug, it’s up to doctors to trust patients with it and patients to be responsible, but there is no doubt that greed and competition with other pharmaceutical companies comes into play when pushing this stuff. Bottom line is everyone involved needs to be more responsible.

Can we talk about how many of those overdoses were suicides though??? I feel like that is an area of the conversation missing from the opioid crisis. Many people use painkillers to commit suicide and we need to look at what portion of the overdoses resulted from suicide attempts. I just think the mental health of the individuals is important to take in to consideration as well.

I hate prescription meds and addiction is horrible. But, No one was forcing anyone addicted to pain meds to continue. Why is it someone else's fault for another person's inability to stop taking a certain drug? Social justice activism and virtue signaling are at all time highs in the world. Take charge of your own life.

This is the same as the nicotine false representation. Of course there are pts that need opioids. But I am here to tell you they were marketed in a different way to the medical profession. Big Pharma and the Sacklers should be accountable .
