Time to leave Crete! Thank you to my good friends Yannis & Dimitris @dimakata for inviting me to stay at the beautiful & luxurious @epavli_hotel. Breakfast poolside under the cool shade of a large avacado tree was so refreshing & relaxing, a perfect place for conversation day or night. Yannis even told me something I never knew about an avacado tree, The avocado has a ‘complete’ flower, with an unusual behaviour known as ‘protogynous dichogamy’. The flower has both functional male and female organs & opens then closes twice over a two-day period, first day functioning as female, the next as male. Avocado pollen is capable of pollinating itself, maximising the likelihood of cross-pollination by opening flowers first in the morning as functioning female then closing & reopening the next afternoon as functionally male. So next time you enjoy an avacado, enjoy the complexity of its very existence. An amazing piece of nature's information to digest.
