@maillardet.peter The Campbell’s soup can had a great deal of critical content in the simple image. First, the structure of the can and label are all relatively the the same, except for the soup content ranging from tomato soup, chicken noodle, split peas, etc.... They were all the same. But as an image, the soup contents weren’t real. It operates in the same way as Magritte’s phrase, “This is not a pipe,” but not in a semiotic resemblance to a phalic form or our cultural understanding of a pipe. The soup cans related to the consumerist nature of 60s society and accessibility of products where a customer could just grab a cab with the label they wanted. The idea of the silk screen multiple also played down the concept of the artist’s touch which was counterculture to the notion of authenticity of touch in abstract expressionism which was the dominant art form before pop art emerged. Does that help to put Warhol’s soup cans into historical context of why they were important? The history of Pop is interesting but it tends to be very much detached emotionally in how it expresses its concepts.

@maillardet.peter All of the information I detailed about Warhol’s soup cans has been spoken about in Art History Book and Art Theory Books. They communicate as metaphors where as this guy’s work appears to be communicate mainly as a narrative as social mirror with symbolic elements (skull). I just recommend that you look at more art and read about its history. I taught this material for years to my students. Art is a language and there are many methods an artist can communicate utilizing principle and visual elements.

@m.thrush honestly @lukepelletier is amazing and respected as an emerging artist who just dropped prints with @1xrun had a @rvca collab and I’m sure many other projects . He has independently created a following and lane for himself with a distinctive style and seems as though he’s successful doing so. Everyone interprets art differently but to say the concepts are “juvenile” is somewhat ignorant ??♂️

@m.thrush no it doesn’t help my understanding, mostly because it doesn’t make sense. So we are at a bit of an impasse here. I think you’ll do well in your career, because you have your arts speak down. But your ideas flow like rhizomes. I wish you well, and I’ll keep ‘following’ if that’s okay. But conversationally there is a disconnect. Best wishes

@norms_art_studio Ron English is wonderful for many reasons. But please share specifically what you understand from this piece. How do you translate the meaning from the subject matter and it’s style. I’m very curious how you understand the cultural message of the artist.

@pzaprty that’s like trying to get people to appreciate @paintedperversions art. They either appreciate art or they don’t. And If they don’t, well... then they will just live and die and that is it.
