Large swaths of Manhattan were plunged into darkness Saturday night following a massive power outage. The blackout, which left tens of thousands of customers in the dark, brought Broadway shows to a halt and left people trapped in subway cars. Mayor Bill de Blasio, who was campaigning for president in Iowa, said it appeared the outage was the result of a mechanical problem in the electrical grid. Power was restored to all customers shortly after midnight, Con Edison CEO John McAvoy said.
