Is there anything in 2019 more corrupt and pointless than an Instagram “influencer”. I mean holy shit, y’all.

glowysophie I am not claiming that the world of Instagram influencers is above-board or a particularly important contribution to society, but I am concerned with how we’re coming for THEM in this situation. In effect, all they’re trying to do is wear cute outfits, take pretty pictures, and make money. Can we not all relate? Is it stupid to do so at the risk of your own health? Absolutely. But how are the influencers the bad guys here? How is it not the company dumping hazardous waste, or the government letting it happen? What environmental impact has this had? What kind of wildlife has been affected by the toxicity man has introduced to their habitat? Why are we so concerned with the stupid but relatively harmless decisions of a small minority when the ultimate reason their decisions are stupid is the result of a much larger problem?

fatale_distraction @jessy_k_brown Its a case of internet vernacular. A Capital-I Influencer is used to refer to people whose sole source of work or income is...well. No one is exactly sure WHAT they do for a living but it mostly involves photoshop and social media; an influencer (one who influences) is different from An Influencer (again we’re still not really sure exactly what they did to acquire their fame????) Nothing wrong with being An Influencer, unless you’re doing shit like putting yourself and/or others in danger or disrespecting some sort of significant cultural monument (tourists and Influencers taking pictures at the Chernobyl memorial with the tagline, “say RADIATION CANCER!! :D :D :D”)

thomas_sadoski @glowysophie if any of these people were showing up at this place to take pictures in their cute outfits and be pretty and were talking about the environmental impact of the pollution they were witnessing...then maybe, maybe I could see your point? But the fact that they’re showing up in their vapid cute outfits and personally PROFITING off of the environmental disaster makes it even more reprehensible.

lindaannettem This is obviously an idiotic thing to do, but on the tails of this week's controversy with another "influencer" this seems like unfair conflation of different issues. At best, it seemed like you were taking a woman's pride in her body out of context and trying to make an issue out of it, but now it really does seem like you are piling on unfairly.
