Video by Bertie Gregory @bertiegregory | These particular wolves take on polar bears. They’re the only known pack in the world to do this. You can see them in action in my new online series "Wild_Life: The Big Freeze." Content sponsored by Destination Canada. It premieres today on Nat Geo YouTube and at natgeo.com/wildlife. This pack of grey wolves was bold, but despite surrounding us just a few feet away, we felt zero aggression, only curiosity. We humans have done terrible things to wolves. It’s thought that in 1600, there were two million wolves in North America. Due to 400 years of systematic extermination, there are now just 80,000. There is hope that they are on a comeback, but they still need us to stop persecuting them. These top predators keep herbivore populations in check, allowing countless other species to thrive. The famous Yellowstone National Park wolves are an example: since their reintroduction, the entire ecosystem has transformed and is now much healthier.
