In the mid-1980s, Marden veered from his early monochromes and grids to calligraphic paintings, inspired by his reading of the Tang Dynasty poet Hanshan (“Cold Mountain”). The thirty-five drawings on view were key creative experiments leading toward Marden’s widely acclaimed “Cold Mountain” paintings of the late 1980s.
