Ahh yes, it's that time of year again: time for the annual air conditioning debate. "Nearly 90 percent of American households now have some form of air-conditioning, more than any other country in the world except Japan, though that will change as global warming alters more temperate zones, and swelling populations and rising incomes in hot zones mean the folks there will clamor for AC, too," Penelope Green writes (link in bio). Has air conditioning gone too far? We'll let you hash it out in the comments.

AC and by Extension Refrigeration is the greatest invention in the last 1000 years for sure maybe even longer. Thanks to AC I can now be more comfortable in the summer months LOL!!! Through the advent of AC more of planet earth can now be inhabited by human beings, in such places as the Beach of Miami in the months of January through December. Even the Europeans are getting into the AC game, Where places like Milan would clear out in August however thanks to brilliance of the guy that brought split units to that part of the world there are more people there to have a ristretto with.

The need for AC is a result of cheap building codes, and buildings that soak up heat. Ive been sweating it out at theatre festival France this week - it's been 35 with no AC in the hotel, or the theatre - but its not neay as bad as if i was back in Canada with the sane temp. Everything here is built to keep the heat out and it's effective. We need more passive house construction- not AC units.

I use my AC pretty religiously, but I live in a high humid area - a few weeks of 110+ temps with humidity that leaves you sweating nonstop isn't unusual. That being said, I wait until it's at least 95 out before turning it on and only use the unit in my livingroom...you never get used to the heat if you're surrounded by cold 24/7.

@yessbeth the older super thick concrete-walled French buildings, are heat-resistant ~ but like every where (France too), that construction is too expensive now. Where is all the stone, brick, concrete in newer developments? Bc purchasers wouldn’t pay for it. Much easier to pay for the a/c ??♀️

Why is @nytimesfashion writing about this subject? Also if the author had done any research, I don’t think they’d have wasted their time writing an opinion piece on something that is detrimental to many people’s health.

Unpopular opinion: you don’t need to set your AC to 60 degrees to be “comfortable” (I live in an area where over 100 degree temperatures are extremely common and we always have our house set to 78-80 degrees)
