@etus_art_ig do you think I’m some kind of dumb ass? I know the original story without doing research because my mom read it to me as a little kid. When princess & the frog came out I was beyond excited because where I lived at the time, black people were seen as monsters, gangsters, ugly people, and nobodies. I’m half black and I was still bullied for being darker then most kids. Tiana was someone who helped me because she is set in a place where black people aren’t appreciated. Although she isn’t my favorite because I was taught white is right, I think black Ariel is someone who can help many people around the world. How many white princesses are there, huh? People cannot say that “you’ve got your Tiana now leave ours alone,” when Disney is making remakes so kids of today can feel the joy of these movies like we did. The black girl could be depressed and she feels Alone is this world and she loves Tiana because she’s black like her, but she might want someone more like her. She wants to walk on the beach and dance, but she can’t. She looks at Ariel but she isn’t pleased because she like the others, white with blue eyes the ideal look of beauty. Black Ariel is someone to break the pattern of just white people for other black girls who might not even like Tiana to love. Remember this is a remake, not the original. When you want to remake something, you want it different then the original. This is very different, but different can be good. I can’t wait to see all the black girls smiling And pretending they are mermaids when u walk out of the theater. It’s gonna be magical

If people are still discussing the casting of ariel as black. I do have a few issues with it, but its not going to matter since disney is free to make changes as they please. My only issues is that the background of ariel is greek mythology with her dad being the greek god itself or implied to be the son. Greeks at the time were a pretty heavily white society with people of color being either slaves or the rare traveling merchant. We got actors that fit the description of individuals from the region their respective movies came from so it feels weird that disney didn't pick someone that has more fitting of ancient greece. Then again they could be saving the greek stuff for Hercules so who knows. The other issue is that hollywood has long had an issue where they whitewashed a lot of characters and roles, and only recently have we finally gotten to a point where we are seeing real progress (more african american, asians and indian/middle eastern actors and directors appearing in the movies), so it feels weird to have ariel played by an african american girl more out of fear that individuals can use it as an argument of black washing hollywood. I'll still go see the movie, however it's still a risky play in my opinion. The art on the other hand is amazing...surprising that I haven't seen it in my feed more recently.

@the_kerr_one As I've stated, I am more than happy for NEW characters that show representation to be created. My problem is with the double standards and hypocrisy being followed by everyone here. If you are not okay with white washing, you should NOT be okay with taking an established character that's existed for 30+ years and expect people to be happy about it. They could’ve made another movie for Tiana, or create an entirely new mermaid or princess for minority groups to look up to. There is no latina princess. But I would never feel okay changing the race of an existing princess to be latina just so I could feel better. Established characters in Disney have been loved for ages. Why would I want to do that to people when I know full well I would not like it if it were done to a latina character I loved? Do you not see how there are two standards here? It’s ok when it’s done to a white character, but not okay when it’s done to a character that represents minorities. I’m pretty consistent with my morals. I always ask myself if I’d be okay with it if it were done to me so that I don’t fall into the trap of being a hypocrite. But I don’t see many people doing that in this case and just excusing it. It makes me sad. Anyway, you don’t have to agree with me but I hope I explained myself well.

The thing is, if they casted a white actor for a black character, they'd be all losing their minds. "It still exists in the original story, a healthy person shouldn't be affected by a fictional character's likeness being.. " as you said, apparently only applies to blackwashing. These are the same people who made a fuss because Jasmine's voice actress was white instead of black, even tho it didn't affect the cartoon at all. Not very "healthy", according to what you said. I agree we need more black princesses and princes and Disney heroes. I'd LOVE to see more original black Disney characters. But changing an already existing character's race to achieve that doesn't seem right. Especially cause if they casted a white character for example for Jasmine or Tiana, everyone would be ripping Disney's throat apart, and we all know that. This is hypocrisy. It seems like a "I only hate this thing when white people do it", which isn't very nice of a mentality. @cyarine , as a famoust and influent artist I'm a bit sad to see you supporting and encouraging these double standards and hypocrisy. But in the end mine is just an opinion, and you're free to do what you like/believe is more right.

I don’t think it was a wise choice to cast a black person as Ariel specifically. Disney has now turned into a cash grab trying to remake their movies. It’s not about ability, it’s not about skill. It’s not about talent and it’s not about expirience. It’s about money. We all know that we’re going to be disappointed. New Disney movies aren’t even worth seeing anymore and the people who argue for them are just sugarcoating reality. If they cast a black woman as a white character, it’s not to bring in real diversity to their movies. Disney knows that if they cast a black main character, they’ll get money from minorities. What should have been done instead is making an original story with the female lead being black. Changing Ariel doesn’t make Disney “So progressive” or whatever, it’s a clear example of why people suck and why minorities should not support these corporations. Do you really think XBox gives a shit about gay people after pride month? No. It’s a publicity stunt. A cash grab.

The most annoying argument against black Ariel is “what if they made Tiana white?? Or Pocahontas?? There would be OUTRAGE!” Yeah there would be, because if they made Tiana white, guess how many black Princesses there would be left? If they made Pocahontas white, guess how many Native American “princesses” there would be left? If they made Mulan white, guess how many East Asian “princesses” there would be left? Same for Pacific Islander (Moana), etc. Zero to none, now apply that same logic to all the white princesses and cry more about it. The media is saturated with white representation, so yes white washing is worse than “black washing” and it is OBVIOUS why. Second point: the race/ethnicity of the princesses of color are intrinsic to their personalities/plot. How are you going to have a movie about soul food and Louisiana Voodoo without a black person (Tiana)? What about Ariel, that is crucial to the plot, would change by her not being white? Nothing
