In 2009 I worked on a story for the Dutch edition of National Geographic magazine on the reintroduction of European bison in the Netherlands, and I have been following the reintroduction process from the sidelines ever since.
European bison were hunted to extinction in the wild in Europe in 1927. However, captive breeding and re-wilding projects have seen the population rise to over 5,000, with more than half living in wild herds. Bison—Europe’s largest land mammal—help to maintain a mosaic of ecologically rich forest and grassland.

sanderslisa362 ? We had a buffalo named General and he was phenomenally intelligent and beautiful. Our german sheperd played tag so to speak with General as he wld pick up one of my old barrel with his horns and effortlessly tossed it up and then bash it out at where j.r. (the dog)once stood! People would come from all over and watch him from the road!If i can find a pic i will return a post for yall!

nirmala_jay The European Bison also known as the Wisent is a remarkable story on conservation. When it all started there were no more than fifty some animals remaining in the wild, the rest being hunted for their meat and the hide. Today after much hard work this species is recovering in their herds. Thank you @jasperdoest for highlighting the plight of this almost extinct animal species.
