“I was seven years old when the first acts of rebellion and liberation began after midnight on June 28th, 1969 in Greenwich Village. Like many, I merely inherited the benefits of their extraordinary courage and fight for fairness and equality. Stonewall was the first shot fired, but there would be the need for many more – and while there have been extraordinary gains, the struggle continues; in earnest.
As a teenager in the 1970’s the word ‘Faggot’ was ubiquitously used by friends and bigots alike. The options of being a gay teenager; even in cosmopolitan New York was really not an option for the vast majority of young gay boys and girls.
I remember the first time in high school when I first snuck off (alone) to my first Gay Pride Parade. It was a visual and energetic wonder. Simultaneously seductive, joyous, and intimidating - but most of all, incredibly inspiring, liberating and empowering. I was not alone. And proud indeed.
The strength derived from that fateful day in 1977 has been with me ever since. It has shepherded me the enduring onslaughts of homophobia, the AIDS crisis, and of course happy times as well – through my de facto marriage to Matthew Malin for the last 26 years, to ever closer parity for all of us; and to my never ending determination for equality for the entire LGBTQIA community.”
