#ArtWords: A still life is an artwork depicting subject matter that doesn't move, such as man-made or natural objects, fruit, vegetables, fish, flowers, wine and so on. Van Gogh painted still lifes with the goal of experimenting with contrasting colours. The more he became immersed in painting, the more he added brighter colours to his work until he was using colours directly from the tube. He wrote to a friend that his goal was to create 'intense colouration, not grey harmony.'

rossiter242 FYI The same book appears with another Goncort novel (Manette Salomon),in a late portrait of Dr. Gachet. I wonder if anyone has produced a list of everything Van Gogh is known to have read. He certainly, in these paintings and a couple of others makes the point of making the titles and authors names legible, and therefore wants us to know that they are important to him.
