Fifty years ago today, a bar called the Stonewall Inn was raided by the NYPD. The riots that would follow, the uprising against police violence, led by trans women of color like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, was a foundational moment in the movement for queer liberation.

The people who fought so fiercely at Stonewall were some of the most marginalized in American society at that time. For decades after, their work was erased.
Marsha P. Johnson was beaten to death in 1992. While we have made progress since then, black trans women are still facing an epidemic of violence. This month alone, four have been murdered.
The police violence that led to that uprising still plagues LGBTQ communities of color, and makes people less safe.
We cannot accept violence against the trans community. We can’t accept trans children being bullied, government-sanctioned harassment like bathroom bans, and persecution.

The first pride festivals began on the one year anniversary of Stonewall. Parades started as an act of defiance in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York in 1970, and now they happen all over the world as a celebration of acceptance and diversity.
As we celebrate, we must also be brave, honoring those who fought back at Stonewall by continuing to stand with trans folks and the entire LGBTQ+ community as they fight for respect, for access to healthcare, against discrimination and violence, and as they continue the fight for their lives.
When people stand up, when they work together, when they organize, we can make incredible progress. We’ll be marching tomorrow in San Antonio, and I couldn’t be more proud to participate in this event that means so much to so many. We have come a long way, but we have a long way to go. #Stonewall50 #Pride
