Assen 2013 is one of the boldest decisions I've done in my sporting career. I don’t think it will be repeated again. Finish a race 30 hours after an operation is unusual, it had never happened before but it was the right time and the right circuit to do something like that. I remember an excess of confidence during practice in the rain, because I had dominated the first practice in the morning in dry conditions I was over half a second clear of second place, I was very strong because I also came from a test in Aragon where I beat the track record, but you can never trust with rain. I remember that I was riding in the best time and I entered that fast corner in fifth - sixth very close to the white line and near that line a kind of puddle formed and when I put my wheel there the bike went out of control and threw me up dragging me about 200 meters through the wet grass of the Dutch circuit. When I got up right away I saw that I had broken the same collarbone for the seventh time.
The pain was so strong that waiting 2 or 3 days to perform the operation was going to be hell, so I decided to travel to Barcelona by private plane and operate as soon as possible. It hurt a lot, even with morphine. They operated me in Barcelona and after the surgery I was feeling strong and I had the idea to return to Holland and to try to race.
When I told my team, they were all surprised and I remember they said: "this guy is crazy". You can run 2 weeks after an surgery, but after 30 hours with anaesthesia and everything else, it’s not possible. I published a Tweet saying that I was going back to Assen and the next day, in the race, I made what people called insanity into reality and a moment that you all remember.
