In this Buddhist parable, the beautiful maiden at the center of this painting has four suitors competing to marry her. The winner will be the one who can memorize the entire Lotus Sutra sacred text within three days. One man succeeds, but on the eve of the wedding the maiden dies, revealing herself to be a form of the bodhisattva Kannon, come to lead people to salvation through sutras.
