That’s partly why the current Italian government’s attitude to immigration sticks in Burlon’s craw. Before this show he said: “We are living in a very weird moment in Italy. They are closing the ports. They don’t want the people to come over here from Africa. They don’t want immigrants and they are afraid of diversity.” Hence a considerable proportion of Burlon’s casting for his show consisted of first-generation Italians of African descent—one small way in which he felt free to stick two fingers up at the current government of Italy.
