Sometimes nature is stranger and more fantastical than science fiction. Those are the real colors of a Bank cormorant’s psychedelic looking eyes. This endangered seabird is restricted to the cold Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Southern Africa and the total global population declined by 60% between 1975 and 2011. Today there are less than 1000 breeding pairs left in the wild.
