Our founder Alexander Johnston was only 23 when he opened the mill in 1797, originally we traded in tobacco, flax, linen and oatmeal. Wool was first produced in the 1840s and the first purchase of cashmere was in 1851. In the 150 years since we have expanded massively and now have two mills, one in Elgin and one in Hawick.
