Nearly 60 House Democrats support legislation to create the commission, which has been stalled in the House for 30 years. The bill was the subject of a congressional hearing on Wednesday — the first one on reparations in more than a decade, and the first on this specific bill. The current debate over reparations has been fueled by the rise of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, as well as by the writings of Ta-Nehisi Coates. In his testimony before the House Judiciary Committee, @tanehisipcoates took aim at Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader: “He was alive for the redlining of Chicago and the looting of black homeowners of some $4 billion. Victims of their plunder are very much alive today.
