lochangyawali The branch of Chamagudao that ends up in Nepal also brought this type of tea to us. In east Nepal Sherpas call it "Su Cha" (सु चा Su Cha) while in far west Nepal in Mugu Karnali this same tea is "Cha Jhiya" (छा (salt) Cha झ्या (tea) Jhiya) in Mugali language which has many loan words from western part of Tibet. The Thakalis of central Nepal around Mustang also drink butter tea and it is called "Maarha Jh-ya" (मा-आर (ghiu / butter) Maarha झि-य्य (tea) Jh-ya). Newar community of Kathmandu in central Nepal who traded mostly with Tibet and China always drank what they called "Bhote Chiya" भोटे चिया literally meaning Tibetan Tea – pressed tea cakes with ghiu or butter and salt. All along the trading routes from Kathmandu to Tibet and China they drank this type of tea. Even now in 2019 these families primarily drink "Bhote Chiya" with other types of tea being secondary.

tastetibet Butter tea made with fresh yak butter is so creamy and smooth, nothing like the rancid taste of soured butter that unfortunately is the only tea tourists get to taste! This is a wonderful photo - thank you ??
