🌬Breath control is a really useful skill during hard portions of climbing. Timing your inhales/exhales can help increase accuracy and body tension. Essentially, you want to coordinate your breath with two factors:
.
🖐🏼 The moment your hand hits the rock (contact control), and
💥 The amount of effort needed to stick the move.
.
The above mentioned are important, but there are many ways to use intentional breathing while climbing. For instance, if you find yourself staring down a small edge or pocket, try a short exhale through pursed (“O” shaped) lips, then inhale sharply as you move towards the hold. Contain your breath until you have contact control, then release the tension. Play around with breathing during your next session!
.
Sound on 🔊 to hear a try-hard “tssa” for every move through the crux of Moulin Rouge (V9/10). Nearly biffed it while battling heat, grease, and tired fingers! 😂 Fun session with the roomies @andrea_ck and @emiko.thehappyshiba 👯♀️🐶 #climbing #bouldering #clearcreekcanyon

Thanks for the tips! If you don’t mind me I have a burning question. I was taught to breathe out hard and quickly when making big moves, and that helped me get more distance and power. So, inhalation and hold breathe during latching will help to shorten the time of muscle engagement and control? I don’t know if I’m on the same page. Thanks in advance! ?♂️

I find that initiating the exhale slowly as i start a movement then more forcefully as you make contact is best, that way I dont zone out and hold my breath at all. It also seems to help with overall pump because as soon as Im secure Im already inhaling, thus keeping my resperations moving rather than having to wait for it to catch up with my climb.

Thanks for posting this! Rhythm is something I’d like to start working on to progress my climbing and I think this speaks to that

I stop breathing when I climb and have to remind myself sometimes. Also, I read that as birth control at first.
