He was fortunate in that his photographic career coincided with the second half of the 20th century, the golden years of photographic reporting and documentaries and many popular picture magazines which could showcase such work. . During that career, cut short by his sudden death in early 1999, Erich traveled the world on assignments and for self-imposed projects–much of the work being in color. However, he always carried, readily available, a small camera loaded with black and white film as well as a box of several extra rolls, for the personal, private pictures that he saw everywhere. . He was obsessively drawn to reflections, enigmas, shadows and anomalies as seen through his own wry, but kindly, view of life around him. Recording these personal impressions kept his own course steady even as he worked with equal devotion on the requirements of widely varying assignments. .
