I was born and raised in downtown Tokyo where Japanese traditional culture was prominent. Although Tokyo is known for its diverse fashion and sub-cultures, there were no half Japanese and half black in my community when I was growing up. Because of this reason, I grew up getting stared at from people no matter where I went.
Since I was 13 years old, I used to skip school to go to Harajuku and Shibuya to hang out. From there, I began to be exposed to and gained interested in the city culture and fashion of Tokyo. I saw it as a way to express myself in a way I couldn't before. Even though I am only 4'11, I was able to build my own style by mixing Japanese Kawaii style seen in Harajuku with street hip hop style.
Although my childhood is in no way average and I had my own share of hardship, my grandmother was always there for me. She was one of the few people who encouraged me to pursue my dreams of being a model and was my number one fan along with my mother. She grew in a Japanese traditional community where she learned traditional Japanese dancing and tea ceremonies. Through her, I was able to keep in touch with my Japanese heritage throughout my childhood while building my own street style.
