I posted a few updates on my story but I also received a number of questions that I figured I’d answer in a post. In no particular order: 1. There was some confusion over Bob in the previous post. Bob isn’t the tiny visible spot on my skin. He’s the tumor under my skin - you can see a shadow from his bulge in the photo on my previous post. The tiny dark spot is just where they did the needle biopsy to take out pathology tissue. Would be pretty funny if Bob was THAT tiny :-) . . 2. I’m on four chemo drugs: taxotere and carboplatin (heavy duty dudes that kill bad and good cells) plus two antibodies herceptin and perjeta (target HER2+ cancer.) Each comes with their fair share of fun + unique possible side effects, TBD in the days ahead. For now, I have a queasy stomach and bone + muscle pain in my calves, hips and feet but the symptoms could get worse each day. 3. As you can see in the photos, I made a last minute decision to try cold capping (frozen ice caps on the head) to attempt to preserve hair follicles. There are lots of reasons to not do cold capping (expensive, heavy, freezing, uncomfortable...and you can still lose a lot of hair in weird patches) but 5-13% of women on my specific chemo drug, Taxotere, report PERMANENT hair loss. That wasn’t a statistic I was quite comfortable with, so cold caps it is...at least for now. . 4. A lot of people asked about why chemo before surgery. I’m considered between a Stage IIc or Stage IIIa breast cancer; the stage is dependent on the number + size of lymph nodes involved. If the chemo works & shrinks the tumor before surgery, we then can rest assured it did a good job of killing other cancer cells in the lymph nodes and floating in the blood/body. The other big hope is to remove fewer lymph nodes which would be much better for long term health! Ok that is all for now!! I am so incredibly beyond grateful for the beautiful messages and support from friends and strangers, many of which have brought me to tears. You know who you are. #breastcancer #chemotherapy #her2positive」6月13日 13時31分 - tarynsouthern
