This is Francis Wells. We photographed the doctor and his team at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, England, as they performed a valve repair procedure. Wells has performed thousands of surgeries, achieving a near 100% repair rate for leaking mitral valves. He acknowledges Leonardo Da Vinci as one of his most important influences, whose anatomical designs prompted him to rethink what he knew about the heart, and has written a book on Leonardo’s studies of the heart. He told us about an experiment published in Nature magazine in 1968 that proved Leonardo was right in his theory of how the aorta functions.
