I am not so popular in my homeland, Japan. 
It has been decades since I started to mention "Superflat" with the intent of producing a self-portrait of post-war Japan and its people. I feel I have annoyed the Japanese people, who seem to find my attitude and perspective wherein I relentlessly mention Japan’s post-war defeat unpleasantly cumbersome.
But in making my artworks, I cannot ignore this reality. This stubborn attitude probably also contributes to my unpopularity. 
All the while, here is someone who has always understood my work; Yujin Kitagawa, @北川悠仁 the leader of the Japanese folk duo band "Yuzu", has collaborated with me repeatedly over the past 15 years. He has been using my flower motif, even when my flowers were not well-known. He is one of the few people in Japan who gets me.
He is someone who has always shook my hand with an open heart and a genuine smile. I am so thankful to him.

Now the band is in the midst of a  nation-wide stadium tour. Wishing you big success with the tour!

僕は母国日本ではあんまり人気がない。
人気のない理由の１つとして、敗戦後の日本人の自画像を描く、的な文脈で「スーパーフラット」とか言って、ワザワザ何十年も経った今も、敗戦敗戦とメンションし続ける姿勢に疎ましさ暑苦しさを感じてしまわれている。しかし、僕は作品を作る上でソコをどうしてもないがしろにはできない。その頑なな姿勢もまた不人気の理由であろう。
そんな中で、僕の作品を理解してくれてもう15年以上、コラボレーションしてくれている国民的なフォークデュオ「ゆず」のリーダー北川悠仁くん。 @北川悠仁 お花のアート作品が今のようにメジャーではなかった頃からずっと使い続けてくれている、日本で数少ない僕の理解者のひとり。
いつも広い心でニコニコと握手してくれて、ホントに有り難い存在です。その彼が @tonari_no_zingaro にきてくれた時の写真。今、彼らは日本全国をドームツアーの真っ最中。頑張ってツアー、乗り切ってください！
