Natalia Goncharova said that this was a painting she didn't want to sell because it represented the happiest time of her life, the two summers she spent at a linen factory in rural Russia, belonging to her cousins. Her grandmother was staying too, whom she adored. The house stood on a raised terrace and there was a pond below used for washing and bleaching linen. The time she spent here transformed the work she made. It was in 1908 that she began to paint scenes of peasants working.
