I always thought this park was pretty.....but then I found out it's basically a giant unmarked grave. 😳💥
Now I'm absolutely SMITTTEN with it.
We're so funny about death in our culture. We relegate it to sterile hospitals and gory movie plots, shoving it from our minds and occupying that very human space with distractions. Personally, I love knowing these blossoms were borne of unknowable darkness. And I love imagining the lives that preceded it.

@pensaaurora From findagrave.com: "Pioneer Memorial Park was the original settlers' cemetery for Sequim, WA. In 1888 John Bell sold the land to Clallam County for use as a cemetery. The county deeded the cemetery to the Sequim Cemetery Association in 1909. Most burials here were removed to the nearby Sequim View Cemetery after 1913 because of drainage issues. However, some burials remained due to the Association's inability to locate next of kin. From the 1920s to the 1960s the site fell into disrepair. In 1951 the Sequim Garden Club acquired a 99-year lease from the Sequim Cemetery Association to remake the cemetery as a park. Over the next 12 years the club cleared the site and landscaped with decorative plantings. The club also reinstalled the few remaining grave markers in a small area at the rear of the park. To protect them from vandalism, they were enclosed in a fence in 1982. As of 2015 the number of remaining burials within the park is unknown."

I have always been fascinated and found great peace exploring cemeteries my whole life. Historic cemeteries are my favorite and we have so many here I Georgia. But. I have visited both Forest Lawns in LA and many in my beloved Michigan and Ohio

My parents want to plant some blossom trees for my grandparents graves. Back in the Homeland the graves are colorful and full of life. Sometimes you see goats munching away. Natures mowing machines.

@robinmay fascinating. I love these kinds of stories, and the literal layering humans do in the world to find our spaces and keep our memories from entirely falling away.

@robinmay Graveyards should not be feared. That's my view at least. It's always nice to see the trees. Reminding us we become one with the earth once more. ?

I enjoy cemeteries, the history and thinking of all the faces of the people who now lay there... so interesting and strangely peaceful @robinmay
