Ranging throughout eastern and southern Africa, this species is highly territorial, driving off any intruders that get too close to their nest. Because of this need for clearly defined boundaries, rollers choose to live in areas with trees that are spaced apart from one another and typically avoid areas inhabited by humans. This habitat is also ideal for hunting, as this bird has a knack for perching on a dead tree and snatching up prey fleeing from brush fires. After a successful hunt, the roller will return to its perch and batter its prey to kill it before swallowing it whole.
