“Look Ma, No hands!”
We received a Martian greeting from our Mars Curiosity Rover 💌 and talk about a proud parent moment: Curiosity collected two Martian soil samples that have revealed the highest amounts of clay minerals ever found during its mission!
Clay often forms in water, which is essential for life. These finding are proof that there was a significant amount of water once in Gale Crater, our rover’s current location. It's likely that the rocks in the area formed as layers of mud in ancient lakes — something Curiosity also found lower on Mount Sharp.
Our Red Planet rover is able to produce these #selfies by taking a string of photos that are stitched together, producing this wide lens camera effect keeping the robotic arm with the camera unseen.
