Early in my career, I spent two months tracking and photographing these elephants with @savetheelephants and @wildfoundation. The project taught me about the importance of protecting large connected landscapes for wildlife and people—and inspired much of my thinking at the heart of the Florida Wildlife Corridor campaign (@FL_WildCorridor). The Mali elephants also deepened my respect for the power of nature. These elephants, unaccustomed to vehicles, required us to approach them only on foot. Looking up from the desert floor at this towering herd made me feel both very alive and very small. It’s hard to believe an animal as powerful as an elephant is also so vulnerable and endangered.
